North-West Londoner Kiko Bun is a
new one on me but based on bouncy new Reggae single ‘Stay Bless’ I’m already
counting myself as a fan. Apart from the lavish organs, tinkling ivories and
bouncing bass there are funky horns and a tight little rhythm that you could bounce
a penny off. Then there’s reggae-pop-ska vocal of Mr Bun himself and the kind
of chorus that is tailored made for blasting out of car windows on a hot-as-hell
summers day – “Couldn’t give a damn, couldn’t give a fuck, couldn’t give a
monkeys. Couldn’t care less, I just stay bless”. Expect to hear this all over
the place this summer and a sanitised version used for various montages on the
BBC along with an appearance on Later at some point. Serious talent combined
with serious fun, a heady brew.
