22-year-old Charlie Steel is a
bit of an enigma but that’s because he hasn’t been churned out by some hype
machine or polished up by a manager/label/PR guru. No, Charlie Steel is your
died in the wool diamond in the rough and we’re all very lucky to be getting involved
right now. The first of these three tracks is ‘Motivation’ and it’s a peachy
combination of the rawness of the Streets, the cheek of Collapsed Lung and the socially
aware banter of Man Like Me but with better basslines and Chic inspired
guitars. Sure, the production quality is as cheap as chips, but this is just a
tag, a calling card if you will, to show off the ideas and give you a flavour.
Next up is ‘Real and Human’ with
it’s circular grind and basic beats that are more punk than Hip-Hop with the
likes of Joe Strummer or Jamie T being the artists that spring to mind from the
frustration in the lyrics delivered with a Cockney accent and a sense of the
relentless as he sings “Soulless tunes for morbid souls”. Steel closes out this
collection with ‘Happiness’ with some more rounded melodies but the lyrics are
more fractured here and the attempts at singing lack a little in confidence
which impacts on the tune. Like I said, it’s raw, it’s rough around the edges
and it’s not perfect but it’s all the more enjoyable because for that and I can’t
wait to hear the next phase of this evolution of young Charlie Steel.
