MOONLANDS – EP REVIEW

Moonlands – Moonlands EP (Foof Records)
Moonlands - EP

Release Date: 27th January 2017

There’s a woozy start to this EP from London combo Moonlands that reminds of the day snuck in to my big brother’s bedroom and discovered the pitch bend on his Akai, good times. The woozy start in question is the opening bars of ‘Shake, I Shook’ which is soon overtaken with some nice, jangly, Marr-esque guitars and the kind of uplifting indie that is woven through modern British musical history. The perky, expressive vocals of frontwoman Lucy Elliot are somewhere between Laura Marling, Kate Bush and Clare Grogan which is a powerful and immediately engaging combination, no diggity. Up next is ‘Islands’ with more of that luscious jangly guitar and 80s indie vibe washing across like the broken hearted montage in a rom-com, possibly featuring a white sandy American beach and rolled up chinos. The final track of this collection is the perkiest of the three in the form of ‘Trip 35’ but it also nods to being the most expansive as it takes the jangly 80s sound and weaves it in to influences like the Maccabees and Best Coast which takes the gorgeousness to another level. There is a definite filmic quality to this music which creates strong imagery for me, at least, and that’s never a bad thing. Unless that imagery is an Andy Warhol style painting of Katie Hopkins in which case I would have to burn the music down (for clarity, Moonlands do not make me think of Katie Hopkins).
