Manc lass Mary Joanna Coogan has
shed her Southern Elektrikk skin and has formed a neat little trio around her
voice with the first fruits of this labour being debut single 'Fade (Tired
Eyes)'. From the easy, country inspired acoustic guitar to the breathy vocals
there is an effortlessness about this tune. Effortlessness in music always
makes me feel that the musicians are doing it because they have to let the
music out rather than because they want to achieve all the trappings. Coogan's
voice has a beautiful lightness to it and when the guitars and drums kick
things up a notch you get a real sense of an artist growing in stature in front
of your ears. This is great British indie with an American influence behind it
all wrapped up in a feeling of regret and longing. Gorgeous.
