GARETH LEE & ANNIE BAYLIS - EP REVIEW

Gareth Lee & Annie Baylis - A Little Light EP
Gareth Lee & Annie Baylis - A Little Light EP

I'm always looking for good things in my adopted Cornwall and, being quite lazy, it's even better when those good things just arrive in your inbox. Gareth Lee and Annie Baylis (not the most imaginative name, guys) are Cornish folks playing folk music so listen up and listen good. This four track EP starts with 'Choices' which immediately shows off the duos smooth, tight vocal harmonies as they take the lead atop the simple piano riff and guitar picking. The song continues to soundtrack the fog rolling in and the night closing in around you as the candles flicker in the darkness to create an intimate warmth seldom found on a recording these days. 'Susie' kicks things up a notch with a lively acoustic riff and some sweet violin before Lee's earthy vocals kicks in and suddenly you've got yourself a swirling, surging, tempestuous piece of music that feels like it's trying to resist being tamed with every sinew.

There is a simple, pure beauty to the music these two create which is impossible to resist but it's definitely music for the grey, bleak days when only a nice mug of tea and a good book will do. 'Everchanging' is a sad  but sumptuous song that pitter-patters like rain on a window mirroring the tears on your cheek as you long for that lover who is missing from your life through distance or bad decisions that can't be unmade. The title track of the EP, 'A Little Light', finishes things off with a wistful but calm tone that again shows off those gorgeous vocal harmonies and simple but well chosen instrumentation. Gareth Lee and Annie Baylis are a talented if slightly understated duo that with the right backing a hit song could find themselves thrust in to an unforgiving lime light. They need a better name though....
