THE PJP BAND & WHOANOWS – SPLIT SINGLE REVIEW

PJP BAND / WHOANOWS - SPLIT SINGLE

THE PJP BAND – I Am A Racer / WHOANOWS – Go
(OUF Records)

RELEASE DATE: 29th October 2012

Two great songs from two up-and-coming Plymouth bands on one single? Just for me? Oh I think so. First up is the PJP band (formerly the Patrick James Pearson band) with their incredibly infectious ode to bicycle awareness, ‘I Am A Racer’. This track has indie anthem written all over it and after listening to it on a loop about 15 times in row it is pretty much my favourite song ever....for now. Pulsing bass and swirling keys wash over tight, punk drums and Patrick James Pearson’s throaty, assured and, well, sexy vocals coat the whole thing in beautiful velvety chocolate. Not since the Prodigy’s ‘Charly’ has a song made me want to dance and be simultaneously socially responsible. Basically, it’s Bradley Wiggins’ theme tune, an Indie disco smash and a ruddy good tune.

So how on God’s green earth are Whoanows going to compete with that, aside from having an arguably better name? Well they might be a Plymouthian trio featuring a member of city favourites Crazy Arm but there the similarities between the two bands end. Whoanows deal in perfectly crafted melodic, choppy punk in the vein of Dananananaykroyd or early A but with a better sense of songcraft. ‘Go’ is the perfect length at just over two and a half minutes and features a great shouted chorus line of ‘You talk so well but you just don’t listen’ which is just begging to be sung back at the band by first 6 rows at a sweaty rock venue with sticky floors and a sense of wonder in the air.

The PJP Band form the outer circles of a Venn diagram of Plymouth’s finest musical acts and where they cross is where Crazy Arm exist. On the evidence of all three bands the music scene in the city is in better shape than ever so all they need now is a name for it – Plymcore maybe?
